The book is totally packed full of historical references and examples of Ugliness in art over many centuries including the current one.
As with the earlier two volumes, The Vertigo of Lists contains several dozen illustrations, literary passages, sculptures, and other material artifacts that serve as visual representations of Western culture and its values over the past five millennia.
It didn’t strike me as especially useful or terrifically original, but the book does have a lot of interesting themes, great illustrations, and Eco’s writing is clear, intelligent, and accessible. Sometimes, we also use a cookie to keep track of your trolley contents.
It is in equal parts a celebration of the near-boundless human imagination and a critical look at how we classify and arrange information and how those classifications have shifted and changed with the tides of time.

When you look at this book in relation to Umberto Eco’s History of Beauty you may find that it seems the one is the other and the other is the one. An amazing exploration of a complex and fascinating subject. Placing Ugliness in Kant’s Third Critique: This was much more interesting than umberto eco’s on beauty. Highly recommended as an dellaa book.
