I love the models, but the painting isn’t bringing the sculpts to life like i was hoping: Thursday, January 21, Review: I’ll have a read of mine this weekend I am sure! Nothing but masterclasss to so great value IMHO. I have to admit that I’m only curious how they did the metallic look on the knight. The thing is I really like the book. Even the weathering is a let down as for some reason they forget how forgwworld use oils and spirits.
Pretty much covered the reason why I did not get this book.
They even push that stupid mix of 4 citadel paints for the Sons of Horus and then apologies for it buy saying you can buy their own brand greens to create the scheme And will be used on the Warlord too. I dont understand why they would include vehicle weathering when they covered that extensively in the other books to a far better standard. Both which are fantastic painting guides on all fronts.
I have the first two books and agree that tgey are excellent books.
Mastdrclass for the review. Now they have their own range of paint at FW, I can see why they would now start to talk about those, and because infantry are not tanks, I can see why those figures don’t stack up as well as some on the internet. What the HH painters excel at are tanks.
Just felt let down with this one after anticipating so much after already owning the older books. It sounds like they have scrimped on masterlass content tbh and blurry pics is pretty much unforgivable at this level. That’s one awesome masterclass – “Paint it good! Have you tried the pure GW book which came with a dvd and covered various techniques albeit at a much lower skill level.
The very first tutorial is covered in one of the other books brass scorpion. So I’m not sure I will be buying it. Exactly how I felt too. I feel bad saying that, but it’s true.
Review: Forge World Model Masterclass The Horus Heresy Volume One – Tale of Painters
Most come from that kind of background of military modelling, so the weathering and painting of armoured vehicles is what they really are good at. I’m revisiting this review as I’m considering painting some Imperial Fists and thanks to your screenshot, even THAT seems useless, other than the scheme reference pics – they didn’t even say which yellow they used.
Oh yea and they even tell you to use boltgun metal. Using Tamiya, Klear, airbrushes, and all kinds of other stuff that was not a GW product push was enlightening. The images do look fantastic.
I’m just being a bit of negative Nancy as it does not compare to the previous two books.
I’m a little lukewarm about the HH paint jobs coming out of Forgeworld. I currently prefer those ones over the Vallejo ones because they’re not so watery. If you’re still looking for a tutorial, check out the Painting Buddha video tutorials.
The first two were also great as they were product neutral. I like it, but can eaily understand why people will say it’s lacking. Since purchase which was nearly a year materclass I have not picked this book up. A tutorial for great looking FW models is cool, but when there are only 3 of them and all vehiclesits not realy interesting for me anymore. Was tempted to order it until I saw a Video-Review of it. I got the book and I think it sucks compared to the first two.
I have seen that video.
I got the book, and I admit its really nice. Think I’ve dodged a bullet now as if I’d bought this for a masferclass on Horus and found out the tip was “paint it good” I think I’d have been very angry.
I got this book thinking it would be focused on painting marines and characters but LOL at how bad the tiny bits of guidance you get on characters are.
I have a couple of the Masterclass books, but find that they are OK for one read through – then just placed on the bookshelf. You can buy the older books and get better versions of the tutorials that are in this one. Infact with the internet people are really spoilt with the amount of brilliant tutorials and all. Thursday, January 21, The first two were awesome, but this sounds disappointing: Pre-ordered as I love the last two and after flicking through this one felt a little sad that it hadn’t maintained the same level of awesome.
Weathering a tank was pretty good covered in Model Masterclass Vol 1.
Forge World Masterclass
It is a fun book, but I don’t know ,It just got side tracked!! From the rest I saw there was not much “new” content. However I tested the Salamander paint scheme they give you; and it comes out nothing like the pictures: I recommend both highly.
